Healthy Hair Series Part 1- The Seven sins of Hair Damage

The Seven sins of Hair Damage

Is your daily lifestyle wreaking havoc with your hair?

Happy New You.  January is perfect month to ditch the carbs, purchase a gym membership you’ll rarely use and pray for a transformation into slimmer and fitter young things in time for your summer hols.  Or something close to that.

We’re all guilty of sinful beauty habits from time to time, but our daily lifestyle could also be putting a considerable strain on our lovely locks whilst we’re blissfully unaware.  Our Healthy Hair series aims to shed some light on the cardinal sins we commit, and we’ll also tell you how you can tweak your routine and hopefully restore a full head of gorgeous hair.

Sin 1.  Over washing

We’ve all been there.  Long day at work?  One of the best ways to relax is a soak in the tub.  Washing your hair though, not so good.  In fact, washing your mane too frequently strips it of its natural oils, like sebum, which prevents your hair and scalp from feeling dry.  If you suffer from greasy roots, then dry shampoo is your saviour.  Just sprinkle, brush and go.

Sin 2.  Squeeze. Don’t scrub.

Towel drying is disastrous for hair, particularly if you tend to scrunch and rub it like there’s no tomorrow.  Vigorous drying with a towel can rough up your hair cuticle (the outer layer of your hair or more importantly, the shine department) causing frizz, fluffy hair and potentially further breakage.  Try to squeeze water from your hair rather than rub it, trust us, you’ll really notice the difference.

Sin 3. Don’t put up with it.

You’ve washed your hair but it’s 8pm, you’ve not had dinner and Netflix is calling your name ever so sweetly.  No problem, just tie it up in a top knot and settle down in your jim-jams for a quiet evening, just you and the leftover Christmas chocs.   As appealing as this sounds it’s not a great choice.  Wet hair is considerably more fragile than dry and twisting it into a top knot or a high ponytail can really do a number on your precious locks.  Don’t brush wet hair either, always use a wide tooth comb and avoid thinking about your annoying boss.

Sin 4.  Heat is not your best friend.

It’s fairly obvious, but overuse of your straighteners, curling tongs and excessive blow drying will put your hair under some serious stress.  Heated appliances can cause dry, brittle hair and give you pesky split ends (don’t pick them!).  You can help by using heat protection products, just remember to actually apply them…not leave them sitting on the shelf.

Sin 5.  Beach heaven.

A good holiday is just the tonic for making you feel refreshed and revitalised.  Sadly, not for our hair.  Sun damage is a nightmare for bleached or colour treated hair leaving it parched and causing split ends, not to mention chemical damage from chlorine in swimming pools.  Take yourself shopping for a cool sunhat and pick up some holiday hair products too.

Sin 6.  Boozy Weekend.

Sorry to be a party pooper guys, but alcohol is a major no-no for your hair.  A cheeky glass of prosecco won’t hurt every now and then (who could resist?) but full on weekend partying can decrease zinc levels in the body and a lack of zinc can result in hair loss.

Sin 7.  Ditch the Junk.

What we consume plays a huge role in how our hair and skin condition.  Fed up with lacklustre hair?  It could be time to evaluate your diet.  Notoriously bad are diet drinks that contain artificial sweeteners namely aspartame, which has been linked to hair loss.  Avoid sugar where possible.  Protein is super important for making our hair grow and sugar hinders the absorption of it. Step away from that cupcake!

Finally, the starchy whites, which go hand in hand with their sugar companions.  White bread, cakes, pastries, refined and over processed foods are converted into sugar causing hair to thin and it’s not great for the rest of your body either.  Sorry guys, it sucks but don’t worry because in part two of our Healthy Hair series next week, we’ll tell you the best way to feed your hair and be kind to your waistline at the same time.
