We’re back with another one: all the ladies with spiral curls stand up! There’s no doubt that this hair is a little high maintenance. Type three hair is described as having a tight, springy curl pattern, with the strand usually forming an ‘S’ shape. Although having a tendency to frizz, type three hair has a lot of body and few detangling problems. This hair usually suffers from dryness due to it’s full-bodied texture. Remember the sebum oil from part one? Well, this isn’t heavy enough to reach past the curls of a single strand. Lack of proper care results in dull curls, so it’s best to keep this hair as healthy and happy as you can; one wrong move could leave you with greasy, weighed-down curls.
Type 3A hair features strands that are almost silky in texture with loose shiny curls. This particular type has curls that are easily defined without the use of products, so you can still afford to be lazy every once in a while. Lucky you!

Type 3B hair is springy and spiralled, typically with the appearance of a corkscrew. Without the use of styling aids, the hair will turn frizzy, but the curls are still clearly defined without it. It’s best to use gels and creams to tame these troublesome locks.

Type 3C hair is tightly drawn and often fine in texture, packed together to create a high density of hair. This means the hair is more coarse and dry, as oils can’t easily reach the ends from the scalp. Despite this, the curls are still well-defined.

Maintenance tips:
Now we’re getting to the nitty gritty of hair maintenance! Curly hair can be temperamental, so you need to battle it with the fire of a thousand suns (and then some). A good, structured haircare regime is vital to keep the hair coily and fruitful.
- Allow the hair to dry naturally; try to limit the use of combs or brushes on dry hair, it’s advisable to comb when the hair is damp; wide-toothed combs work better for tangled hair.
- Use a silk scarf or satin cap while sleeping to prevent frizzing.
- Try to stick to sulfate-free shampoos, this will avoid dryness and retain moisture easily.
- When using heavy conditioners, opt for water-based stylers afterwards to balance out the moisture in your hair.
- Keep the hair moisturised regularly to prevent breakage and dryness.
How did you like that? Stay tuned for Part four, where we will discuss type four, Kinky hair. Please share and comment below, we would love to hear from you x
